Brian Armstrong is Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Bruce Power
He joined Bruce Power as its General Counsel and Corporate Secretary in October 2000 and was designated Executive Vice President and General Counsel in January 2007.
Since joining the company as its senior legal officer he has been responsible for building and managing the Bruce Power Law Division and for the company’s corporate secretarial function. He serves as secretary to the Bruce Power Board and to the Board Committees and is an ex-officio member of the Board’s Pension Committee. He reports directly to both the Chief Executive Officer and the Chairman of the Board.
Along with the Chief Executive Officer and the other five Executive Vice Presidents he also serves as a member of the Bruce Power Executive Team and is a member of the management committees dealing with pension administration, code of conduct, and corporate sponsorship.
In his role as General Counsel he led the in-house legal team in the successful completion of the transactions involving the leasing of the Bruce Nuclear Power Development by British Energy and Cameco Corporation; the sale of British Energy’s interest in the business to Cameco, OMERS, and TransCanada; the Bruce A Units 1 and 2 Restart project; and the restructuring of the Bruce Power Limited Partnership. He has also represented the company before the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
Under his leadership the Bruce Power Law Division has introduced a series of leading edge law department performance metrics which measure individual and Divisional performance against business plan goals and objectives and demonstrate value added to the business. In addition, he has negotiated innovative partnering agreements with the company’s principal external legal service providers resulting in significant improvements in the effective deployment of external counsel.
Brian is a graduate of the Directors Education Program of the Canadian Institute of Corporate Directors and the Rotman School of Management, and holds the Institute’s ICD.D designation. He has served as corporate secretary to the Bruce Power Board since its inception and is a director of several Bruce Power subsidiaries. He is also a director of Huron Wind Inc. and the Canadian Nuclear Law Organization. He currently serves as a director of the Ontario Centres of Excellence and has previously served as a director of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the Canadian Institute for Environmental Law and Policy, the Sierra Club of Ontario Foundation, and the Dellcrest Childrens’ Centre. He is a past president and an Honorary Director of the Albany Club of Toronto, past Chairman of the Board of Governors of St. Andrew’s College, and a former director of the Canadian Educational Standards Institute.
