Bruce A’s Unit 3 is back in service after a planned $300 million investment outage that started in November, extending the unit’s life for up to 10 years. At the same time, Unit 4 has achieved a record run of over 500 days providing safe, clean, low-cost electricity for nearly a year and a half straight.

“The success of the Unit 3 investment program will allow this unit to produce low-cost electricity for up to an additional 10 years,” said Duncan Hawthorne, President and CEO. “With Unit 3 coming back we are also realizing a record operational run on Unit 4 that is another good example of how these units perform when they are returned to service following strategic investments,” added Hawthorne.

The Unit 3 outage represented a $300 million investment by the company, with a significant economic spin-off throughout the province and an additional 1,000 workers employed to carry-out the extensive work program.

“Bruce Power restarted Units 3 and 4 in 2004 and our performance and investment program clearly demonstrates that once units are returned to operation they can be counted on to deliver safe, clean and low-cost electricity for the province,” said Norm Sawyer, Chief Nuclear Officer of Bruce A.

Units 3 and 4 were restarted by Bruce Power in 2004 and 2003 respectively. Unit 4 is currently rated as one of the top CANDU reactors in the world and its current record run of 500 days since returning to service exceeds its last record run of 267 days. Bruce Power is in the process of carrying-out non-nuclear inspections and repairs to return Unit 2 to the electricity grid on a schedule to be confirmed and is on-track to return Unit 1 in the third quarter of this year.
