On Dec. 7, 2017, Bruce Power provided the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) with an update to the application for the renewal of the Power Reactor Operation Licence as it relates to the 2017 Bruce Power Environmental Quantitative Risk Assessment (ERA), which includes the Major Component Replacement activities.
This submission represents Bruce Power’s commitment to keep information in its application up to date. This submission includes updates to incorporate:
- Results from routine environmental monitoring that were received after June 30, 2017;
- Additional information on the rights and interests of potentially affected Indigenous communities;
- Information provided in response to questions and comments received from the CNSC and Environment and Climate Change Canada; and
- Information provided in response to feedback received from the public and other stakeholders through our outreach and engagement activities.
These updates do not change any of the conclusions of the ERA and the additional data from routine monitoring is not materially different from previous years. In the future, as is the practice outside of a Licence Renewal period, updates from routine environmental monitoring will be incorporated into the five-year ERA cycle and into the annual environmental monitoring report.
The ERA continues to demonstrate that the operation of the Bruce nuclear facility and associated life-extension activities has not and will not result in significant adverse environmental effects, both for human health of nearby residents or visitors, and for ecological receptors as a result of exposure to radiological or non-radiological substances. This is consistent with similar assessments that have been conducted since 2001.
Conclusions of the Environmental Risk Assessment as previously communicated include:
- For human health there are no radiological or non-radiological risks to members of the public near site or visitors to the on-site Indigenous burial ground.
- For ecological health, there are no radiological or non-radiological risks to wildlife or the environment.
- All activities are within bounds and do not require further Tier 3 assessment.
- No interactions were identified that pose a risk to humans or the environment.
- Potential impacts of future activities are anticipated to be similar to those of existing and predicted operations and as a result would not cause any significant adverse environmental impact.
- Current environmental monitoring programs are sufficient and will be maintained.
