Spotlight on: Brittany Sanderson

This is a regular series where we spotlight Bruce Power employees and what they do here at Bruce Power, as well as what they like about living in the area.

Tell us about yourself

While I was born and raised in Bruce County, I spent some time living overseas as a child. The experiences I have had, opportunities I was given and friendships I gained were unforgettable however, I always knew Bruce County was my forever home.

I have a true passion for figure skating — it has been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember. When I stopped competing, I knew I wasn’t ready to give up the sport, so I started coaching. I have been coaching for the Saugeen Shores Figure Skating Club for 10 years and love every minute. I recently started competing again as part of an adult synchronized skating team and am now working on developing two synchronized skating youth teams in the area.

Other things I enjoy are spending time at the beach, travelling to new places and spending time with my family.

Tell us about your career and what brought you to Bruce Power?
It has always been a goal to work at Bruce Power and become a full-time employee here so it was no surprise to my family and friends when I started my career working for a contractor during the Bruce A Restart. Document Control was my first official title and from there I continued to move around and gain experience in various departments finding my true passion in Project Management.

After showing a keen interest in projects, specifically scheduling, I completed a number of Primavera P6 courses and started as a Junior Scheduler. In 2011, I was offered a temporary position with Project Management and Construction as a Project Planner. This job incorporated both cost and scheduling and was one I learned to love.

I soon enrolled in an online business diploma program which incorporated Project Management fundamentals, in order to increase my skills. During this time, I worked full-time during the day and spent countless hours studying at night. It was a challenge to balance work, school and everyday life, but I am very proud of what I accomplished.

My one-year anniversary as a full-time Bruce Power Employee is just around the corner and I look forward to what career milestones are ahead for me within the company.

What do you love about living in the area?
There are so many things I love about this area. Community is number one. We give off a “one big happy family” feel, always looking out for each other. We are often taking part in events to support each other whether it be painting the town purple in support of the Liv-A-Little Foundation, raising money to better equip our local hospitals or wearing our hometown branded clothing on a day dedicated to showing how much we love where we live. Whatever it may be the sense of community is strong.

We are truly surrounded by beauty: Sandy beaches with clear blue water, sunsets that take your breath away and provincial parks and trails that you can wonder through for hours. The outdoor adventures are endless with something to do for everyone no matter what the season.

It is a tourist community where so many people come to visit and vacation but we are the lucky ones who get to enjoy it every day!

What keeps you at Bruce Power?
The opportunities are endless within the company. Bruce Power is committed to developing employee’s talent and granting the opportunity to explore different career paths. The company is always investing in their people.

Recently I had the opportunity to spend three days at the Ivey School of Business in London learning about Project Management Fundamentals from some of the best most experienced people.

Bruce Power also treats their employees with the utmost respect. They truly care about our well-being and make us feel like part of the Bruce Power family. The company provides many on-site services such as doctors, physiotherapist, fitness rooms and more, promoting a healthy lifestyle and work and home balance.

Bruce Power plays a large role in sustaining and growing our local communities. It is both exciting and rewarding to be a part of and contribute to that growth.

What do you enjoy most about your job and what are your future career goals?
Project planners work with a number of delivery organizations on site as well as vendors from around the world to execute projects that will extend our operating life. The project organization is high paced and always changing. The job is full of excitement and challenges that allow you to work together in a team environment to ensure the safe delivery of projects.

As far as my future career goals, I hope to continue in the projects organization. My current focus is on continuously improving and growing as a project planner, working towards learning as much as possible about projects and Project Management. Being able to manage my own project or teams is intriguing and I hope that with further training and experience I will have the opportunity one day.
