Bruce B update

Bruce Power continues to monitor the release of mineral oil, which occurred Thursday night when a transformer failed outside Unit 8. The unit was offline for planned maintenance.

A mineral oil sheen was observed late this morning in the station’s intake and outfall areas, as well an area near a drain at the shore of Lake Huron. Crews have deployed booms to contain and absorb the mineral oil sheen, and our Environmental team continues to monitor the situation.

The release of mineral oil is not expected to pose any significant risk to the environment or the public. This type of mineral oil is insoluble, meaning it does not mix with water and remains on the surface. It is biodegradable, has very low levels of toxicity, and contains no PCBs or radioactive material. It breaks down naturally over time in sunlight and through exposure to various weather conditions, though we intend to capture the vast majority through absorbent booms and surface-skimming techniques.
