Bruce Power celebrated 10 million hours worked without a Lost-Time Injury by donating $50,000 to the joint Bruce-Grey Catholic and Bluewater District School Boards’ Technological Education Health and Safety Project.
“We are so fortunate to have Bruce Power support this important safety initiative,” said Joyce Benninger, Supervisor, Health and Safety, Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board. “We can learn a lot from a safety-focused company like Bruce Power.”
Donated on behalf of Bruce Power employees, the funds will be used to update all the technical education shops across the boards, providing safe places for students to learn. Bruce Power’s donation will go toward the creation of online health and safety manuals. The overall project will provide a solid training program for teachers that will help to instil a safety culture in the schools and with the students.
“The intent of this project is to act as a pilot program that can be repeated across the province,” Benninger said. “We have support from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Labour, Association Directors of Education of Ontario and now Bruce Power, an industry leader in safety.”
Bruce Power’s 10 million hours equals more than a year worked without a Lost-Time Injury.
“This achievement is something all employees should be proud of,” said Len Clewett, Bruce Power Executive Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer. “We have accomplished some major milestones in the past year, including bringing Units 1 and 2 back into service, and to do that with such a stellar safety record is a real accomplishment.”
In addition, Bruce Power has provided funding to the following safety programs this year:
- Town of Saugeen Shores – accessible roll-away boardwalks to provide a safe access point for wheelchairs and strollers to access the beach
- Saugeen Shores Fire Department Remote-Rescue Unit – this purchase will help make the trails in Saugeen Shores safe
- First Time Full Time Safety Conference – aimed at local students, this conference provides a platform for students to learn about various safety courses
- SMARTRISK – Distracted Driving Program – provides a strong safety message to students about the risk of distracted driving
