Bruce Power is pleased to announce that it has donated $50,000 to the United Way of Bruce Grey’s Winter Warmth Program, which helps low income families and individuals with their monthly energy costs.

“Everyone deserves a warm home, but some families have to work hard to stretch their money to cover all their household bills,’’ said Duncan Hawthorne, Bruce Power’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “Winter can be particularly harsh in Bruce and Grey counties and we hope our participation in this program will lend a helping hand to those who need it most.”

Francesca Dobbyn, the Executive Director of the United Way of Bruce Grey, thanked Bruce Power for its generosity at a time when the demand for the Winter Warmth Program continues to rise.

“This has been a hard winter and with energy costs rising, families are struggling to keep the heat and lights on,” Dobbyn said. “With Bruce Power’s help, we now have the ability to assist typical, rural-based sources of heating, which have no dedicated funding stream.”

Rural residents seeking relief for propane, oil or wood heating costs for the winter have already drained that portion of the United Way’s Winter Warmth Fund, Dobbyn said. Overall, the need for assistance is twice as urgent as last year. In 2009/2010, the United Way provided more than $70,000 to support this initiative, but has provided more $140,000 in the first three months of the 2010/2011 program.

The Winter Warmth Program was initially created as a winter-only program, but expanded in 2011 to run year-round. The program is a grouping of three provincial supports: Winter Warmth (gas); Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (electricity); and Grey County’s Provincial Emergency Fund, along with the United Way’s fundraising dollars.

Eligible recipients include low-income households who are in arrears or at risk of disconnect on their energy bills and have exhausted all other sources of financial support. The United Way also helps applicants receive financial counseling. Donations to support the program can be made by contacting the United Way of Bruce Grey.
