Bruce Power and GE’s Power Services have entered into an agreement valued at more than $56 million through a competitive bid process for generator work in Bruce A, as part of Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program.

The contract is for refurbishment work on the two major components of the generators — the stator and the rotor — in Units 1, 3 and 4.

“The Bruce A Generator Refurbishment Program is part of a long-term asset management strategy to support long-term service of Bruce A,” said Gordon Leighton, Project Manager, Bruce Power.

Bruce Power supplies 30 per cent of Ontario’s energy at 30 per cent less than the average residential price. Extending the life of the Bruce Power site will ensure decades of low-cost, reliable, baseload electricity for Ontario families and businesses. The Unit 6 Major Component Replacement project gets underway in 2020 and is part of Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program, which began in 2016 and will extend the life of the Bruce site until 2064.

“Working with Bruce Power to help them meet their long-term power generation needs is something we take great pride in,” said Caroline Reda, President, GE’s Power Services North America. “Our industry-leading ability to service both GE and other original equipment manufacturer’s components is a unique capability we bring to this agreement.”

“The refurbishment of Ontario’s nuclear reactors at Bruce will not just power Ontario homes, businesses and industry; it will drive our economy with high-wage, high-skill careers as well,” said Bob Delaney, Member of Provincial Parliament for Mississauga-Streetsville. “More than 90 percent of the value of contracts, such as the agreement between Bruce Power and GE’s Power Services, stays in Ontario, and builds communities such as Meadowvale, home of GE’s Power Services in Canada.”

“Both Bruce Power and GE’s Power Services place tremendous value on high-quality workmanship and reliability, and their partnership will continue to be an important source of Ontario’s electricity supporting Mississauga and the broader economy,” said Gagan Sikand, Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Streetsville. “I congratulate both organizations on this important announcement.”
