September 24, 2026 — Bruce Power is investing $300,000 to support McMaster University’s Nuclear Energy and Radioisotope Development (NERD) Camp, helping create pathways for Indigenous youth to explore careers in nuclear energy, engineering, science, technology and medical isotope production.
The investment, valued at $100,000 annually over the next three years, will ensure participation remains cost-free for students, covering transportation, accommodations, meals, laboratory access and instruction for up to 20 students per week over two weeks each summer.
McMaster’s NERD Camp is an immersive, on-campus program that introduces high school and post-secondary students to nuclear science, engineering, and broader STEM career pathways through a supportive and inclusive university experience.
Participants live in residence and engage in hands-on activities such as reactor tours, lab-based workshops, and research engagements that demystify complex concepts such as radiation safety and medical isotope production, while illustrating their real-world applications in health care and clean energy. Through mentorship, exposure to diverse career paths, and direct interaction with research infrastructure, the program builds foundational knowledge, fosters a sense of belonging, and inspires long-term interest in STEM.
With a dedicated stream for Indigenous youth and partnerships with SON and McMaster Indigenous Student Services, the camp advances reconciliation and inclusion while creating clear, sustainable pathways into nuclear and STEM communities.

Driven by increasing demand for clean electricity, cancer-fighting medical isotopes and advanced nuclear technologies, it is estimated that Canada will require more than 20,000 university graduates equipped for nuclear-sector careers by 2040.
At the same time, Indigenous peoples and other equity-deserving groups remain underrepresented in STEM disciplines and nuclear-related professions. Programs such as the NERD Camp help address these challenges by providing early exposure to science and engineering fields, hands-on learning experiences and mentorship opportunities that can lead to future educational and career success.

Students will also experience university life by living on campus and engaging with faculty, researchers and industry professionals.
