Bruce Power marks four-year anniversary of Isotope Production System with $360,000 donation to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation in support of cancer research and care

Bruce Power is teaming up with The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation to help create a world free from the fear of cancer with a donation of $360,000 to support research, education, and clinical care to benefit patients at home and around the world.

The donation comes as Bruce Power celebrates the four-year anniversary of the commercial launch of its innovative Isotope Production System (IPS), with Unit 7 becoming the first commercial power reactor in the world to produce lutetium-177 in October of 2022. A second line was added, making the company a reliable supplier of cancer-fighting lutetium-177 for the world health-care community.

“Bruce Power continues to be a strong partner in creating more ordinary tomorrows for patients and their loved ones,” said Dr. Miyo Yamashita, President and Chief Executive Officer, the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. “This generous donation will be instrumental in helping to fund vital research and clinical care at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the world’s leading cancer research and treatment centres.”

The gift will be used by the Foundation to support the theranostics fellowships at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, part of University Health Network (UHN), over the next three years.

“We’re proud to support the great work the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation and UHN do to help in the fight against cancer,” said James Scongack, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice-President, Bruce Power. “Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer and medical isotopes are helping to provide targeted therapies to treat this disease we hope research will help eradicate.”

An international collaboration between Bruce Power, Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON), Isogen (a Kinectrics and Framatome company) and ITM Isotope Technologies Munich SE (ITM) brought together technical expertise, investment and isotope-processing capabilities to develop and install the Isotope Production System (IPS), with opportunities for future expansion.”

Earlier this year, Bruce Power and SON signed an historic $250-million expansion of their Gamzook’aamin aakoziwin isotopes partnership to deliver cancer-fighting medical isotopes and create lasting economic benefits for the Chippewas of Saugeen and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nations. The financing that supports this investment is backed by a provincial guarantee through the Indigenous Opportunities Financing Program.
