Bruce Power donates $10,000 to wildfire relief as air quality warnings provide stark reminder on Clean Air Day

Bruce Power has donated $10,000 to wildfire relief efforts through the Canadian Red Cross, helping in resilience and recovery activities in response to fires that continue to affect air quality across the country.

With the onset and intensity of the wildfire season this year, we have seen how the fires can impact communities and how the air pollution can quickly spread across Canada and into the U.S.

More than 17,000 people have been evacuated in Manitoba and communities in Saskatchewan are also being affected by wildfires.

“Bruce Power is proud to make this donation to the Red Cross to help ensure the communities and people affected by the wildfires get the assistance they need,” said John Peevers, Bruce Power’s Director of Community, Media Relations and Economic Development.

Donations to the Canadian Red Cross will be used for assisting those impacted by the wildfires with immediate and ongoing relief including financial assistance, support to evacuees and the communities hosting them, recovery and resilience efforts in response to the wildfires, as well as supporting community preparedness and risk reduction for future all-hazard disaster events within Manitoba.

Ontario’s air quality has improved significantly over the past decade, thanks in part to nuclear helping the province phase out coal-fired generation in 2014. Even though Canada’s air quality is ranked amongst the cleanest in the world, according the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution still impacts the health of many Canadians, contributing to more than 17,000 premature deaths each year and annual health impacts estimated at $146 billion.

June 4 is Clean Air Day, which is observed to recognize how important air quality is to our health, the environment and the economy. As one of Canada’s largest clean-energy suppliers, Bruce Power is committed to helping Ontario and Canada reach climate goals.

Air pollution can lead to heart and lung diseases, stroke, lung cancer, and premature death. In fact, there is no safe level of exposure to many air pollutants.

Air pollution in Canada comes from several sources, including human-caused and natural. Human-caused sources include the burning of fossil fuels for transportation, electricity use and industrial processes. Natural sources of air pollution from wildfires, dust and pollen are becoming more of a concern due to climate change.
