Bruce Power’s fleet of nuclear units are playing a major role in providing residents of Ontario with clean, safe, reliable, low-cost power throughout one of the hottest Augusts on record.
In the midst of the dog days of summer and amid the unrelenting heat and humidity that has gripped the province, electricity demand has been predictably high. Ontario, which is experiencing the second hottest August on record, is also seeing the highest demand for power to date this year.
Through it all Bruce Power has maintained its fleet reliability with all available units running at high power over the course of this record breaking heatwave while keeping its Life Extension Program, one of Canada’s largest green infrastructure projects, on track to deliver emissions-free electricity to 2064.

Bruce Power’s low-cost power has continued to provide stability to the Ontario electricity grid throughout the summer. Frequent restrictions to importing power from Quebec during the heat waves limited out-of-province power sourcing, while intermittent generators of electricity such wind and solar contributed 50 per cent less electricity in August than would be expected at other times in the year.
The nuclear industry in Ontario provides the backbone of Ontario’s electricity system and plays a crucial role in helping keep costs down for Ontario residents and business.
The cost of Bruce Power nuclear remained stable through 2021, even as those associated with other forms of generation fluctuated and increased due to the demand and operational challenges exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Bruce Power continues to produce 30 per cent of Ontario’s power at 30 per cent less than the average cost to produce residential power and is the source of half of Ontario’s nuclear generation.
